Is it enough to make art only for myself? That thought occurs to me when I finish this piece and get an unexpected response from my husband. He can't figure it out, (that's OK); doesn't relate to it at all (is that OK?) But, I love it! The bowl was given to me in 1966 to mark my engagement to my son's father. The bowl is a perfect size; not too big and not too small, about 12 inches in diameter. Over the years, it has held everything from seashells to salad. It is much loved. There are deep grooves all around it, and the way tarnish defines them is strikingly graphic. I stick some green apples in it and am inspired by the way the green reflects in the bowl. I wrap a blue scarf around it. I try out several approaches to abstracting the image and settle on this one because of the way the silver melts into its own reflection. I decide that it is enough that I love it.
